Ukadiche Modak (Ganesh Chaturthi)
Classic Ukadiche Modak using Nandi Sooji and Maida. Steamed dumplings with coconut and jaggery filling. The traditional Ganesh Chaturthi prasad.
Ingredients
- Nandi Sooji (1 cup, fine)
- Nandi Maida (2 tbsp)
- Water (1.25 cups)
- Ghee (1 tsp)
- Salt (a pinch)
- Fresh grated coconut (1 cup)
- Jaggery, grated (3/4 cup)
- Cardamom powder (1/2 tsp)
- Poppy seeds (1 tsp, optional)
Steps
- Heat ghee in a pan. Add grated coconut and jaggery. Cook on low heat till the mixture comes together but is still moist. Add cardamom and poppy seeds. Cool completely.
- Boil water with salt and ghee. Lower heat. Add Nandi Sooji and Nandi Maida together while stirring. Cover and rest for 5 minutes off heat.
- Knead the warm dough till smooth and pliable. Use ghee on hands if it sticks.
- Make small dough balls. Flatten each into a thin disc. Pinch 5 to 6 petals around the edge.
- Place a spoon of coconut filling in the centre. Pull all petals up and pinch at the top to seal in a peak.
- Steam modaks on a greased plate or banana leaf for 10 to 12 minutes. Serve warm with a drizzle of ghee.
Kitchen Tips
Use fine Nandi Sooji for a smooth dough. Keep covered while shaping so the dough does not dry. Steam over medium heat to prevent cracking. Offer to Lord Ganesha on Ganesh Chaturthi.
