  1. Heat ghee in a pan. Add grated coconut and jaggery. Cook on low heat till the mixture comes together but is still moist. Add cardamom and poppy seeds. Cool completely.
  2. Boil water with salt and ghee. Lower heat. Add Nandi Sooji and Nandi Maida together while stirring. Cover and rest for 5 minutes off heat.
  3. Knead the warm dough till smooth and pliable. Use ghee on hands if it sticks.
  4. Make small dough balls. Flatten each into a thin disc. Pinch 5 to 6 petals around the edge.
  5. Place a spoon of coconut filling in the centre. Pull all petals up and pinch at the top to seal in a peak.
  6. Steam modaks on a greased plate or banana leaf for 10 to 12 minutes. Serve warm with a drizzle of ghee.

Kitchen Tips

Use fine Nandi Sooji for a smooth dough. Keep covered while shaping so the dough does not dry. Steam over medium heat to prevent cracking. Offer to Lord Ganesha on Ganesh Chaturthi.

Common Questions

Why does my modak crack?
Dough cooled down. Knead it warm, shape immediately. Reheat briefly if it stiffens.
Can I make modak without rice flour?
Yes. Sooji and maida is a sturdier festive version, easier to shape if you're new.
